How Doctors Diagnose (Vid)

Today's video comes from secondopinion-tv.org (see link below) and is 25 minutes long but don't let that put you off taking the time to watch it. It's also not specifically directed at neuropathy but as we all know, the diagnostic process leading to a firm diagnosis of neuropathy can be a long and frustrating one both for patient and doctor. It's interesting to watch doctors talking about how they come to a diagnosis when a patient arrives with a list of symptoms. It gives you an insight into what doctors are looking for and also how you can help by giving them as much concrete information as possible. Making a list of your symptoms, including dates and any medications and supplements you may be taking, will help the doctor build up a picture of what could possibly wrong with you. Fortunately, neuropathic symptoms are pretty clear and should lead to an initial diagnosis, leading to further tests and treatment. Unfortunately, as many of us know, we can be sent packing with a 'you have to learn to live with it' treatment course and these days, that's just not good enough. The message of this video is that the patient's narrative is the key and should be treated seriously and with respect. Definitely worth half an hour of your time. You can also read the transcript (see link) if you would prefer.

Art of Diagnosis (transcript)

Imagine having a condition that cannot be diagnosed for months or years. How do doctors find the answer to an elusive disease, and what role does the patient play in finding the cause?

This episode takes the expert diagnosticians through a case of a patient whose diagnosis is far from clear. See first hand how doctors work together, and with the patient, to find the cause of the symptoms, and an appropriate treatment.

Key Point 1

Getting to a diagnosis can be a long road. The doctor asking specific questions and the patient giving complete information is key to the process.

Key Point 2

The end point of any elusive diagnosis may not necessarily be finding a name for it, but finding an effective treatment.
