Lpathomab: A Future Drug For Neuropathic Pain

Today's post from cnbc.com (see link below) is a tually a press-release and therefore an advertisement for a new treatment for neuropathy which has been submitted to the FDA for approval. Normally, this blog doesn't advertise in any form but when a new drug seems to be promising and will engender interest among neuropathy patients, it has to be noted. The drug, Lpathomab, "is an internally discovered, first-in-class antibody targeting Lysophosphatidic Acid, or LPA, a bioactive lipid that has been characterized in the scientific literature as playing a key role in nerve injury and neuropathic pain." This may mean little to the casual reader but is indicative of the depth of study now being put into neuropathic pain treatments. It is becoming clear that studies at molecular level are becoming more sophisticated and showing real promise of real solutions in the future. Whether Lpathomab turns out to be successful or not, is the question and it has to be said that the company are pretty much at the beginning of the process leading to a drug on the shelves. They need FDA approval to continue their development plans but although it may be difficult to pronounce, keep Lpathomab in the back of your mind as being a possibility for the future.

Lpath Submits Investigational New Drug Application for Lpathomab for Neuropathic Pain
  Monday, 2 Feb 2015 | 8:00 AM ETPR Newswire

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Lpath, Inc. (NASDAQ: LPTN), a leader in the discovery and development of lipid-targeted therapeutics, announced that it has submitted an Investigational New Drug (IND) application to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a Phase 1 study of Lpathomab™ for the treatment of neuropathic pain. The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of Lpathomab in subjects that are experiencing neuropathic pain. Lpath plans to begin enrolling patients once the FDA's IND review period is complete and the study has been approved by the trial sites' investigational review boards.

Lpathomab is an internally discovered, first-in-class antibody targeting Lysophosphatidic Acid, or LPA, a bioactive lipid that has been characterized in the scientific literature as playing a key role in nerve injury and neuropathic pain. Lpath's preclinical studies showed strong in vivo results with Lpathomab in several different pain models, which suggest that LPA may be an attractive target across a variety of chronic pain conditions, including diabetic peripheral neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain and pain associated with lumbosacral radiculopathy.

"We've made great progress in advancing Lpathomab towards the clinic and are eager to start our first-in-human study for our third antibody product candidate produced using our ImmuneY2TM drug discovery engine," said Dario Paggiarino, M.D., chief development officer of Lpath. "We believe our approach of targeting the ligand (LPA) with an antibody may have distinct mechanistic advantages over traditional small molecule approaches to address an area of significant unmet medical need."
